High Tech Resumés

The electronic resume organizes and presents your qualifications in a computer friendly format. It is similar to a conventionalresume because it is on paper, but different because its content and format are designed to be compatible with a computer.Many employers are using resume management systems to transfer paper resumes into a computer-controlled databases. This allows for them to be effectively stored and searched.

You should consider preparing an electronic version of your resume if you will be sending your resume to the following:

  • Human Resource Departments in large organizations
  • Employment agencies and search firms
  • Employment websites (that also accept paper resumes)

Tips for preparing an electronic version of your resume:

  • Do put your name in bold typeface and center your name and contact information.
  • Do put your name and Page Two on the top, upper left hand margin (if you have a two-page resume).
  • Do use a key word summary section after your heading (words or phrases that represent knowledge, skills, abilities and experience).
  • Don’t print front-to back or staple a two-page resume.

The Internet resume is a version of your resume that is designed to be used in cyberspace. It is for on-line use. It uses a format, called American Standard Code for Information Exchange, which presents your qualifications in a way that is recognized by all computers. You do need to have an internet version of your resume if you will be sending your resume to employers who maintain home pages on the Internet and to employment Web sites.

Tips for preparing an Internet version of your resume:

  • Do use pure text only (use all capital letters for words or phrases that you want to stand out).
  • Do limit your lines to 60 characters and use a left hand margin alignment.
  • Do use a keyword summary section following your heading.
  • Do use a five space indentation followed by a plus sign and then another space instead of bullets.
  • Don’t use bold typeface, italics, underlines or any type of graphical technique.
