Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code

Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College will present the program Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code on Wednesday, December 4 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 252/253 of the College Center Building. During the program, Ruha Benjamin, professor, activist and author, cuts through tech industry hype to show how emerging technologies can reinforce white supremacy and deepen social inequity.
Ruha Benjamin, a professor in the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University, studies the social dimensions of science, technology and medicine. Her work provides tools for decoding tech promises with sociologically informed skepticism. Benjamin is the author of the recently published Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code, which presents the concept of the “New Jim Code” and shows how algorithms and technology innovations can perpetuate institutional racism.
