November 19

Anna Yeung-Cheung was born and raised in Hong Kong and has campaigned for democracy in China for more than 20 years. Anna Yeung-Cheung

What: Stand With Hong Kong, during which Yeung-Cheung will speak about recent events in her homeland as well as the efforts of herself and others to promote democracy there.

When: Tuesday, November 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Where: College Center Building, Room 254

Why: Earlir this year, protests mobilized in Hong Kong in historic numbers — originally against a controversial extradition bill that would have allowed Hong Kong authorities to hand over to China people charged with crimes. Opponents called it a dangerous overreach to Beijing’s authority over the former British colony. The bill was withdrawn, but protests have spread to reflect wider demands for democratic reform. Yeung-Cheung urges governments and citizens to stand with Hong Kong as it fights for democracy.
