Nassau Community College Presents: Black History Month 2014

Sister Souljah: My Experience as an Activist

Garden City, NY – As part of its Black History Month celebration, Nassau Community College is pleased to present a program by prominent activist and author Sister Souljah, who will speak about her life experiences. Sister Souljah: My Experience as an Activist will take place on Tuesday, February 11 at 11:30 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the College Center Building.The author of four best-selling books, Sister Souljah is a multidimensional woman. From 1995 to 2007 she was the Executive Director of Daddy's House Social Programs, the charitable wing of Bad Boy Entertainment. At Daddy's House, Souljah created cultural and academic programs that were offered to urban youth and housed at New York City's Columbia University. She also created, designed and directed summer sleep away camps and international youth travel groups for the organization.Souljah has produced several outdoor rallies and concerts against racially motivated crimes, police brutality and the mis-education of urban youth. As an entertainer, she has spoken to the hip-hop audience about politics, culture, business and social organization. She spoke at the Million Woman March, appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and Larry King Live, and was featured on the cover of Newsweek magazine.Born in the Bronx, Souljah graduated from Rutgers University and traveled throughout her college years. During that time, she worked with refugee children in Mozambique and participated in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. In the U.S., she created, financed and implemented the African Youth Survival Camp, a six-week summer sleep away academic/cultural camp for 200 children of homeless families.Sister Souljah: My Experience as an Activist is free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled.
