Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College celebrates Constitution Day this year with the program The Police and the Constitution, presented by NCC history professor James Coll, who is also an NYPD detective. The Police and the Constitution will take place on Wednesday, September 21 at 9:30 a.m. in the College Center Building.

During his presentation, Prof. Coll will answer such questions as:

  • Can a police officer frisk an individual who is not taken into custody?
  • Is evidence seized without a warrant admissible in court?
  • Does the Miranda warning have to be read to every suspect arrested?
  • Is the search of a vehicle operated by a person who violated a minor traffic infraction lawful?

Highlighting circumstances and Supreme Court decisions, Prof. Coll will illustrate how the ideals of the founders of the constitution and their times have been applied to the evolving powers of the police in modern society.
