The Nassau Community College Spring 2010 Cultural Program and the Women's History Month Committee Present "When Push Comes to Precious: the Novel, the Film, the Reality" Author Sapphire

author sapphireMarch 15, 2010 Garden City, NY –The Nassau Community College Spring 2010 Cultural Program and Women’s History Month Committee are proud to present the author Sapphire, who will talk about her experiences in "When Push Comes to Precious:  the Novel, the Film, the Reality" on Monday, March 15 at 2:00 p.m. in the College Center Building.

Author and poet Sapphire’s novel "Push" won the Book of the Month Club Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction and the Black Caucus of the American Library Association’s First Novelist Award. It was named by the Village Voice as one of the top 25 books of 1996 and by Timeout New York as one of the top ten books of that year. "Push" was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award in the category of Outstanding Literary Work of Fiction. In 2009 it was adapted for film as the movie "Precious", which has won many awards and is in contention for several Oscars.

Among Sapphire’s poetry collections are "American Dreams", which "Publisher’s Weekly" called “one of the strongest debut collections of the nineties” and her latest collection "Black Wings and Blind Angels". Her work has been translated into 13 languages and adapted for the stage in the United States and Europe. In addition, Sapphire has taught literature, fiction and writing at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Trinity College and SUNY Purchase, among other institutions.
