The Nassau Community College Departments of Theatre and Dance and Africana Studies Present "On Strivers Row"January 23 – 25 & January 28 – February 1

Garden City, NY The Theatre and Dance Department and the Africana Studies Department at Nassau Community College proudly present the play On Strivers Row directed by Bruce Edwin Jenkins. The play will be performed January 23 through January 25 and January 28 through February 1, 2009.In this satire of the Harlem society that resided on the very elegant Strivers Row in the 1940s, Oscar and Dolly Van Striven have prepared for an evening that must be perfect. On this night, their daughter Cobina will make her society debut, and the entire event will be recorded for the public by Tillie Petunia, the editor of the black newspaper. All manner of mishaps and mayhem make for a very exciting evening, including a visit by horse racing aficionado Ruby Jackson and her friends Beulah and Joe. And what will happen when both of Cobina's suitors the poor one she loves and the self-centered rich one who is pursuing her show up for the party? On Strivers Row playwright Abram Hill, actor Frederick O'Neal and other actors from Harlem founded the American Negro Theatre (ANT) in 1940. An outgrowth of the illustrious Negro Unit of the Federal Theatre Project based in Harlem, ANT was active throughout the mid-'50s.Tickets for performances of On Strivers Row cost $9.00. Senior tickets (55 and over) are $7.00, as are those for NCC alumni or groups of ten or more. Children 12 and under may attend a performance for $5.00. Tickets for those currently attending college or high school are free with valid ID.
