Nassau Community College Presents its Fall 2008 Cultural Program

Garden City, NY Nassau Community College offers the exciting and timely events listed below during its fall 2008 Cultural Program. The programs, which take place in the NCC College Center Building, are free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled. In some, seating is limited. A Democratic/Liberal Point of View: Christine Pelosi Monday, Oct. 13 at 2:00 p.m. Daughter of House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Christine Pelosi directs the Congressional Candidates Boot Camp that helped elect 12 new members of Congress in 2006. Currently a member of the Democratic National Committee, Pelosi has worked in Washington as a government special counsel and as a Congressional Chief of Staff.

A Republican/Conservative Point of View: Rich Lowry Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 11:00 a.m. Rich Lowry is the editor of and a weekly columnist for the National Review, the influential conservative journal, and a frequent commentator on Fox News Channel. His bestseller, Legacy, is a critical look at the Clinton presidency. Humorous and pointed, Lowry speaks his mind with no apologies. MTV Rock the Vote Tour: Featuring Veronica and Shane from MTV's Road Rules Ñ Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 12:30 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. This year, the college vote could make a difference. The MTV Rock the Vote Tour features a non-partisan, multi-media discussion that goes deep into the makeup of our democracy. Leadership starts in college use your power and influence by voting on November 4. Justice Delayed: A True Story of Wrongful Confession with Marty Tankleff Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Tankleff had just turned 17 in 1988 when he was arrested for killing his parents in their home on Long Island. Based on a dubious, unsigned “confession” extracted from him following hours of interrogation that he recanted almost immediately, he was convicted and sentenced to 50 years to life. After 17 years in prison, Tankleff's conviction was vacated by the New York State Appellate Court in December 2007. On July 22, 2008, all charges against him were finally dismissed. A report is still pending from the New York State Investigation Commission, which is investigating Suffolk County law enforcement for its conduct in Tankleff's conviction. The Castle: An Off Broadway Play Comes to NCC Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 12:30 p.m. Four formerly imprisoned New Yorkers with a total of 70 years of incarceration relate their journeys of crime, privation and redemption found at the Castle, a residence operated by the Fortune Society. The Fortune Society is the starting point for 400 people released from prison each year. The Castle is a unique, inspirational drama.
