Garden City, NY Nassau Community College is proud to host its 12th annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration this fall with various educational and enlightening programs. All programs, which take place in the College Center Building, are free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled.
Latin Heritage Traveling Museum Tuesday, September 19, 10:00 a.m. Ð11:15 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.- 2:30 p.m. This traveling exhibit highlights the accomplishments of Hispanics and Latinos in America and around the world.
"Dare to Struggle, Dare to Win the Legacy of Latino/a Activism" with Rosa Clemente: Thursday, September 21, 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Rosa Clemente is a Bronx-born, Westchester county-raised journalist and community organizer. Her work has appeared in many publications and she has made presentations at over 200 high schools, colleges, community centers and other organizations.
"The Majority Minority" ("Si Se Puede!") Rev. Allan Ramirez: Wednesday, September 27, 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Born in Ecuador and raised in New Jersey, Rev. Allan Ramirez is an activist who is pastor of the Brookville Reformed Church as well as Protestant Chaplain for the Nassau County Police Department. He has been featured in and contributed to numerous media outlets.
Platanos and Collard Greens (Off-Broadway play): Thursday, September 28, 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. This play is a romantic comedy that tells the story of an African-American man and a Latina woman who confront cultural prejudices while defending their bond to family and friends.
Comedic Performance by the Sal Soul Comedy Troupe: Thursday, October 12, 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. The Sal Soul Comedy Troupe consists of Latino male and female comics and actors whose cutting edge skits poke fun at Hispanic stereotypes. Among their other venues, they perform each month at Caroline's Comedy Club in New York City.
