This past summer, NCC student Luna Salinas conducted biochemistry research at Purchase College under Dr. Bellevue, an amazing example of a student making her mark on research while attending community college.
Her project, titled “Duration and Strength of Essential Oil Antifungal Activity Against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans, and Aspergillus brasiliensis,” focused on exploring the antifungal properties of plants as an alternative to traditional antifungal treatments.
After completing the research program, Luna independently applied for the ABRCMS Travel Award, and we are proud that she was selected as one of 667 Travel Awardees, sponsoring her costs to attend the conference in San Antonio.
As one of 300 Presentation Awardees from 2,800+ abstracts, Luna was one of only three community college students to receive this honor.

Congratulations to NCC student Dejaun McFarlane, who was awarded the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute 2025 Criminal Justice Scholarship!
The NYS Sheriffs’ Institute Scholarship Program for Criminal Justice Majors provides a $500 scholarship to one student majoring in Criminal Justice, Police Science or a similar program from each community college in New York State, and SUNY Canton, each year.
