Nassau Community College Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with Campus Programming
GARDEN CITY, NY — Nassau Community College (NCC) celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of campus events highlighting Latino culture, community, education and achievement, including a special gathering hosted by the Long Island Latino Teachers Association (LILTA) on Friday, October 23.
The event brought 160 female high school students to NCC where they met with Latina community leaders who shared their experiences with the goal of inspiring the younger generations. Students also toured our campus and participated in a workshop about navigating college. Dr. Maria Conzatti, NCC Chief Administrative Officer, addressed attendees, recognizing the important role educators play in supporting students, inspiring future generations and strengthening their communities.
NCC’s Hispanic Heritage Month programming also included a Latinx Book Fair held earlier in October organized by Dr. Leonardo Falcón, Assistant Professor of History and Founding Director of the Latin American Center for Academic Success and Achievement (LaCasa) and the community organization Cuentos de Triadas. The event drew more than 100 students and numerous members of the community to campus. The festival celebrated Latino voices, literature, and cultural expression. Held in collaboration with campus partners, the fair provided an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members to connect through the arts and celebrate the diversity of the Latino experience.
"Our role as educators is to support and empower our youth," Dr. Falcón said. "We want them to learn about our/their histories, contributions, and achievements and to be proud of them."
Through these events, Nassau Community College continues to create opportunities for cultural celebration, community engagement and recognition of the individuals who make a difference in education and beyond.
NCC is proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing the achievements, stories and contributions of the Latino community while fostering a welcoming and inclusive campus for all.
