Jane Jeong of Flushing Valedictorian of the Nassau Community College Class of 2019  Jane Jeong

Garden City, NY – Flushing resident Jane Jeong is the valedictorian of the Nassau Community College class of 2019. The 21 year-old was a liberal arts major at NCC.

Jeong is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, where she participated in musical plays and was a member of the mock trial and varsity golf teams. After graduating from high school she went away to school for a year, but found that not to be the right fit for her at the time. “I was looking around for the best education locally and my mom suggested Nassau Community College to me. I took a summer class in public speaking and saw how beautiful the campus was,” said Jeong. She decided to enroll at Nassau full-time.

Jane was extremely impressed by her professors. She also decided to become active at the College. She was published in the College Honors Program journal, Veritas, was on the executive board of the honors club and completed an internship at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). That proved to be a turning point for her. “I found that I had a passion for human rights advocacy. I learned in classes about how different groups of people were treated throughout history and how we sometimes don’t know about the experiences of people who are different from us,” Jeong said. In addition, through her activities inside and outside the classroom, Jeong became acquainted with people from different cultures made many friends at Nassau.

Jeong — who has been accepted into the School of General Studies of Columbia University — hopes to continue her studies and obtain a law degree in either human rights or international law.
