Garden City, NY — Nassau Community College is pleased to announce that its radio station, WHPC 90.3 FM, was the winner of five national awards at the 2019 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) conference held on March 2nd, including Best Community College Radio Station in the Nation. The other four awards were: Best Overall On Air Schedule; Best Artist/Celebrity Interview (Herb Alpert, hosted by WHPC’s Michael Anthony); Best Public Affairs Program (Your Family Health); and Best Morning Show (The Nassau Morning Madhouse).

With a membership of over 1,000 non-profit, education-affiliated radio stations and webcasters, IBS has for 79 years awarded exceptional college and high school radio stations.

“Nassau Community College is so proud of its award-winning radio station where our students begin their broadcast careers with the assistance of our top-notch radio professionals.  WHPC 90.3 combines cutting edge broadcasting with in-studio experiences for our student broadcasters. The station provides entertainment for our campus and the greater community, as well as real-life lessons for our students.  It’s a winning combination and we are so pleased that WHPC has been recognized for the national leader in broadcasting that it is,” said NCC President Dr. W. Hubert Keen.

“WHPC has been an amazing college radio station for 47 years and counting — and it’s finally getting the national recognition it deserves! Our mission is to provide professional broadcasting training to qualified Nassau Community College students, and these awards prove we are accomplishing it,” said Shawn Novatt, the station’s director. “Plus, with over 60 different types of programming, we are hyper-focused on the Nassau County community, giving airtime to local non-profit groups and organizations whenever possible.”

Nassau Community College’s radio station is home to approximately 120 volunteers, most of whom are NCC students. Its programming includes sports, entertainment and informational shows, including a variety of music shows featuring pop, rock, polka and Italian music. The station can be heard at 90.3 FM and worldwide through the iHeartRadio app, as well as Amazon Alexa and Google Home devices.
