NCC Fashion Design Students Pair with Long Island Movers & Shakers for "Design Wars" Competition at Roosevelt Field
Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College Fashion Design students will compete against one another in "Design Wars," an interactive design competition to take place at Roosevelt Field Mall near the J.C.Penney Department Store on Friday, October 14 beginning at 1:00 p.m. The event is presented locally by Winthrop University Hospital. In September, eight NCC Fashion Design students were paired with a "dynamic Long Island woman" and challenged with creating a custom red carpet look inspired by the model's choice of celebrity, from Catherine Zeta-Jones to Jennifer Anniston to Sophia Loren. Under the guidance of Nassau Marketing/Retailing/Fashion Prof. Sharyne Wolfe, the students sketched designs for their client. They then drafted a pattern for the design, constructed the garment and created the ensemble, all the while staying on a budget of $100 for materials, provided by Roosevelt Field. The designs will be revealed for the first time when they are modeled on the Simon Fashion Now runway by the women who inspired the looks. Among the women are the Fair Media Council's Jaci Clement; Peri Appollo from WKJY's Steve & Peri Show; singer Mary Lamont; and Miss Long Island 2012, Jessica Pinckney. Newsday.com Senior Multi-Media Producer Meredith Daniels will serve as event emcee. The designs will be judged by JC Penney Store Manager James Skopkowski; Freelance Fashion Contributor Jennifer Kim; Bare Escentuals Boutique Manager Rosemary Dietrich; and Long Island Press Fashion Writer Licia Avelar. The winning student will receive a $500 American Express® Simon Giftcard®, and the runner up will receive $250 American Express® Simon Giftcard®. The students' names will also be announced on Roosevelt Field's Facebook page."Through Design Wars, our students have become empowered to take their learning to the next level beyond the classroom," said Prof. Wolfe. "To have the opportunity to design for such notable Long Island women is a tremendous real-life experience for these talented individuals that will benefit them as they embark on their chosen career path."
