Nassau Community College Celebrates Black History Month
 36th Annual National African American Read-In

 Keynote speaker is author and creative writer Don Mills

January 29, 2026, Garden City, NY – Nassau Community kicks-off its Black History Month festivities with an open read-in on Monday, February 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 am and 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Room 252/253 of the College Center Building (CCB).

During the read-in, participants are invited to read, sing, or perform a work written by their favorite African American author. Attendees can sign up on the spot to participate. Audience members can listen and reflect.

At 12:30 pm, Author and Creative Writer Don Mills will discuss his books about slavery in New York and Massachusetts. Mills is the author of four poetry collections and is known for his powerful work on the history of slavery in New York. He is also an acclaimed performer of one-person shows based on the works of Langston Hughes and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The National American Read-In was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. It ommemorates works written by Black authors who elevate the Black experience. For more information about this event contact studentactivities@ncc.edu.
