Nassau Community College Professor Runs for His Students Prof. Cohen

Garden City, NY – When people say that Nassau Community College Professor Richard Cohen goes the extra mile for his students they aren’t kidding.  The Co-Coordinator of NCC’s Honors Program has already completed the Chicago Marathon and is set to run the New York City Marathon in November, while simultaneously raising scholarship money for an honors program scholarship.  (Download hi res photo)

“I work so closely with the (honors) students and see how hard they work and how some of them struggle with their other responsibilities.  They are an inspiration to me,” said Prof. Cohen.  “This is my way of giving back.” Individuals can sponsor him by going onto the NCC Foundation’s web page (ncc.edu/foundation) and writing in the words “honors” to direct the donation.  Prof. Cohen also is soliciting sponsorship via CrowdRise.

Prof. Cohen — a Physical Sciences professor who teaches climatology — will also wear a specially made t-shirt and hat promoting the College’s Honors Program.

The Honors Program at Nassau Community College is a selective program made up of students who have graduated at the top of their high school classes.  Attending students may be invited to the program if they have achieved a 3.5 GPA in their coursework.  Courses are enhanced, not accelerated.  Students not in the Honors Program are permitted to take an honors course if they perform well enough in their college coursework. There are approximately 300 active students in the NCC Honors Program.
