Nassau Community College EOP Summer Institute Prepares Incoming Students for College Success Through Academics, Enrichment and Hands-On Learning

GARDEN CITY, NY — August 26, 2026 — Nassau Community College recently welcomed 40 incoming students to campus for the College’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Summer Institute, a four-week pre-freshman program designed to help students build academic skills, develop connections and prepare for a successful transition to college.

The summer program, part of SUNY’s Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program, provides incoming EOP students with an opportunity to experience college life before beginning their fall coursework. Students participate in academic instruction, enrichment activities, professional development and social programming while becoming familiar with the NCC campus and the resources available to them.

“This year, we are welcoming one of the largest EOP cohorts the College has seen in recent years, including both first-time, full-time and transfer students,” said Ariyanna Simmons, Acting Director of Special Programs, EOP, Nassau Community College. “Our Summer Institute gives students an opportunity to build a strong foundation before beginning their college careers while also encouraging them to explore their interests, discover their strengths and develop meaningful connections with their peers, faculty and the NCC community.”

Throughout the Summer Institute, students receive instruction designed to strengthen academic competencies in areas including reading, writing, mathematics and critical thinking. They also have opportunities to meet faculty members, connect with EOP staff and acclimate to the campus environment.

This year’s program also featured the launch of EOP Pathways, a new initiative providing students with opportunities to complete independent projects in Art and STEM. Through the pathways, students engaged in hands-on learning, developed critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, collaborated with their peers and learned from professionals in their areas of interest.
Projects developed by students included work ranging from robotics to abstract art and will be featured as part of an EOP Summer Showcase, giving students an opportunity to share what they created and reflect on their summer experiences.

In addition to academic programming, the Summer Institute provides opportunities for students to participate in enrichment and social activities, helping them establish a sense of community before the start of the fall semester. The program is intended not only to strengthen students academically, but also to help them feel confident and connected as they begin their college journey.

SUNY’s Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program provides academic support and supplemental financial assistance to students who have the potential to succeed in higher education despite limited financial resources and inadequate academic preparation. At NCC, EOP provides academic support, tutoring and supplemental instruction, modest financial assistance for non-tuition expenses, and a strong sense of community.
