Nassau Community College Student Award Winners for 2025

SUNY Chancellor’s, Outstanding Student Leaders, and
Student Activities Awards Presented  

May 19, 2025, Garden City, NY – Twenty students from Nassau Community College were presented with awards at the recent Student Awards ceremony.

This year, five NCC students won the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence: Fabiya Amin of Hicksville, Rajiv Vakani of Williston Park, Alexus Heiserman of Hempstead, Jordon Groom of Glen Cove, and Cheryl Verity of Baldwin.

The SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.

The seven Outstanding Student Leader Award winners for 2025 are Daniel Wiesehahn of Farmingdale, Rajiv Vakani of Williston Park, Alexus Heiserman of Hempstead, Jordon Groom of Glen Cove, Kareemah Best of Brooklyn, Anayah Isaacs-Ali of North Baldwin, and Jessialy Avilez of Rochester.

The Outstanding Student Leader Award is given to students with a 3.5 cumulative GPA and 42 Credit hours (or the equivalent) completed with no more than 20 transfer credits who holds an Executive Board or a Team Captain/Leader position and has made significant contributions to student activities or athletics in this position.

Eleven students received the Excellence in Student Activities Award this year. They are Melissa Blumberg of Bellmore, Shanice Brown of Rosedale, Queens, Emily Fiegenbaum of Garden City, Kristina Higgins of Levittown, Phalanne Laurent of Laurelton, Queens, Michael Martello of Levittown, Amaya Nelson of Lindenhurst, Sy’ria Perry of Hempstead, Rijo Rajan of Floral Park, Shirley Sanchez of Island Park, and Maya Suzuki of Hicksville.

The Excellence in Student Activities Award is given to students with active participation in student activities, at least two semesters in attendance and a 3.0 cumulative GPA who have completed an average of eight (8) credits (or the equivalent) per semester in the student’s last two consecutive completed semesters.
