The NEST, NCC’s Campus Food Pantry, Celebrated its 10th
Anniversary with Special Event on April 29

April 30, 2025, Garden City, NY – The NEST, the food pantry located on the campus of Nassau Community College, celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special event on Tuesday, April 29 on the NCC Quadrangle.

The NEST has provided nourishment and other vital support to members and the campus community and the community at large since 2015. Since then, the NEST Food Pantry at NCC has been commended by the New York State Governor’s office as a model site to which other campuses should look for guidance.

Following the mandate that all SUNY and CUNY schools have a food pantry or stigma-free food access for students, SUNY launched a Food Insecurity Task Force, which includes as members NCC Professors and NEST leaders Sharon Masrour and Helen Rice, who shared the firsthand successes of the NEST to combat food insecurity on college campuses and recommend the necessary changes and best practices to alleviate this serious issue.

“Access to healthy food is a basic human right,” said Prof. Masrour. “At The NEST, we are working every day to alleviate inequities by providing a wide variety of resources to combat basic needs insecurity in our community. We admire the resilience and brilliance of our very many guest families.”

The NEST, a free-choice food pantry, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization supported by several individuals and groups, including individuals, clubs, academic departments and student organizations on the NCC campus, as well as LICares food bank, Island Harvest food bank, corporate donors, private donors, various fundraising efforts and special events, civic organizations, and religious groups.  All donations given to the NEST go directly to the purchase of food, the operation of pantry programs, and individuals and families in need.

The NEST is located in North Hall on the NCC campus.  For more information about the NEST visit nestncc.weebly.com.
