Nassau Wraps Up Homecoming Week

Garden City, NY – Nassau Community College’s 2023 Homecoming and Alumni Week was one for the record books – seven straight days of bringing alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends together to celebrate Lions Pride.

“What I love about homecoming is the opportunity to deepen our sense of community,” said Dr. Maria Conzatti, chief administrative officer of Nassau Community College and a 1986 graduate of the school. “It is truly wonderful for our alumni to rekindle their bonds with their alma mater and to engage with our current students, sharing the excitement surrounding the many advancements taking place at the college.”

This year’s Homecoming and Alumni Week featured a blend of both steadfast traditions and new events. The week was jam-packed with activities organized by the Nassau Community College Foundation, Athletics Department, Student Activities and the Nassau Alumni Association.

From October 23-29, 2023 activities included an alumni fashion show in the college bookstore, Nassau Night at the new PDQ Restaurant in Westbury, and a dome lighting in the college’s signature colors of orange and navy at Nassau County’s legislature building in Mineola. More than 800 prospective students, parents and families, as well as faculty, staff and alumni, participated in the Fall Open House on Sunday, October 29.

Homecoming Football Game

On Saturday, October 28, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman added a touch of local pride and excitement by officiating the coin toss at the homecoming game at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. Also in attendance was NCC alumnus Patrick Ryder, the police commissioner for Nassau County. The college’s music department serenaded attendees with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem and a concert under the lunch tent.

The Nassau Lions roared to a 23-7 Homecoming win over the Hudson County Community College Vikings. Fans enjoyed an unusually warm October Saturday as the Lions took the lead in the first quarter on a field goal by Thomas Zabransky and never looked back. Yardin Gazit’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Andre Mottas and Zabransky’s extra point increased the Lions lead to 10-0 at the half. Hudson did put up 7 points in the third quarter, but the Lions responded with touchdowns by Gazit and Zachary Mitchell in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Half-Time Faculty and Staff Recognition

During halftime, NCC faculty and staff – who were hand-selected by student-athletes for recognition at the game – were honored for their dedication, support and mentoring. Halftime also included performances by the college’s cheerleading team and half-time recognition of the 2023 NCC Men’s Wrestling NJCAA National Champions and the presentation of an NJCAA Division III Third Base Gold Glove to NCC baseball’s Julio Lizardo.
