Feminist Activist and Writer Gloria Steinem to Appear at Nassau Community College

Garden City, NY – The NCC Sexual Harassment Education Subcommittee, the Cultural Committee and the Women’s History Month Committee are happy to announce that Feminist Activist and Writer Gloria Steinem will appear at the College on March 26 at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the College Center Building. The title of her presentation is “The Progression of Feminism: Where are We Going?”.

Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, editor and feminist activist. She is particularly interested in the shared origins of sex and race caste systems, gender roles and child abuse as roots of violence, non-violent conflict resolution, the cultures of indigenous peoples and organizing across boundaries for peace and justice. In 1972, Steinem co-founded Ms. Magazine. She remained one of its editors for 15 years and was instrumental in the magazine’s recent move to join and be published by the Feminist Majority Foundation. In 1968, Steinem helped to found New York Magazine, where she was a political columnist and wrote feature articles. As a freelance writer, Steinem has been published in Esquire, The New York Times Magazine and many other magazines in the U.S. and other countries and has received many awards for her writing. She is currently at work on Road to the Heart: America As if Everyone Mattered, a book about her more than 30 years on the road as a feminist organizer.

Steinem helped to found the Women’s Action Alliance, a pioneering national information center that specialized in nonsexist, multiracial children’s education, and the National Women’s Political Caucus, a group that continues to work to advance the numbers of pro-equality women in elected and appointed office at a national and state level. She was president and cofounder of Voters for Choice, as well as of the Ms. Foundation for Women, a national multi-racial, multi-issue fund that supports grassroots projects to empower women and girls. Steinem has also been involved in numerous other empowerment and educational projects.
