The Psychological Counseling Center provides psychological assessment, counseling, and crisis intervention at no charge for students at Nassau Community College. Assessment is done at the initial visit to determine how best to meet a student’s needs. Depending on the type and complexity of the issues presented you will be referred to a psychological counseling on campus or to a therapist, mental health center or hospital off-campus.
Students who are referred to a psychological counselor here on-campus will be scheduled for a 45 minute session. During this time, you and the counselor will talk about the issues and concerns that have brought you into the counseling office.
Before your appointment, it helps to think of the things that caused you to call the counseling office in the first place. Typical issues include family or primary relationships, self-confidence, depression, anxiety, stress, and time management. If it concerns you, it is appropriate to discuss. Information shared by you in a counseling session will be treated by the counseling staff with the strictest confidentiality. It will not be disclosed to anyone outside the counseling office, except in unusual circumstances such as a court subpoena or imminent danger to yourself or someone else. As your treating team of professionals, the counseling staff may, however confer with one another in order to improve the quality of our services to you. If you have questions regarding the nature of confidentiality, please ask your counselor.
