PROGRAMS AVAILABLE
It is important that applicants review the program chart in order to determine to which program they wish to apply. The chart provides a complete list of available programs, as well as the requirements needed for admission and deadline dates, if different from the general deadlines.
TRANSFER PROGRAM versus CAREER PROGRAM
Career programs result in either an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree or a certificate. Transfer-oriented programs lead to either an Associate in Arts (A.A.) or an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree. However, many of our students who complete A.A.S. degree programs successfully transfer to four-year colleges. It is also true that students who complete an A.A. or A.S. (transfer-oriented) degree program will find their preparation at Nassau beneficial in helping them find employment, if they choose to work while subsequently completing their bachelor’s degree.
LIBERAL ARTS—WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN IT DO FOR ME?
In addition to our other transfer programs, Nassau offers A.A. and A.S. degree programs in Liberal Arts and Sciences. These transfer-oriented programs provide an appropriate first two years of study for students wishing to pursue a baccalaureate degree in a variety of areas.
ENROLLMENT OPTIONS
Students have several options for enrolling at Nassau Community College. These options include:
DAY COURSES available to students meeting the deadlines for admission and registration.
EVENING COURSES offered Monday-Thursday evenings are a great complement to those who are employed or who need to be at home during the day. Evening courses usually begin one week after day courses begin.
WEEKEND COLLEGE offers classes Friday nights, as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons. You may call the Weekend College Office at 516-572-7832.
ONLINE COURSES are offered using web-based technology. You may call the Distance Learning Office at 516-572-7883.
COLLEGE OF THE AIR provides an alternative method of participating in a college-level learning experience, using a variety of instructional materials. Some of the courses are "on the air" by being broadcast on the NCC radio station, WHPC-FM 90.3; others are on television via WLIW-TV 21, Long Island's PBS station, or Public Access Television Channel 71 (Great Neck). Call the College-of-the-Air office at 516-572-7883.
FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME ENROLLMENT is a choice made by each student. Full-time is defined as 12 or more credits. Some financial aid eligibility may be impacted by the student’s choice to attend either full-time or part-time.
HOW TO APPLY
Applicants should review How Do I Apply for Admissions to determine how to apply, based on the type of student they will be at Nassau Community College.
ADMISSION APPLICATION FEE AND DEADLINES
All applicants must submit a $40.00 non-refundable application fee. A bill will be sent approximately one week after your application is received, or you may submit payment with a Payment Form. The Payment Form is needed to appropriately apply the application fee to the student’s account.
Fall Semester 2008 Deadline: AUGUST 8, 2008
Nassau Community College reserves the right to deny matriculated status to any applicant who has not submitted a completed application and all necessary supporting credentials by these deadline dates.
- Some programs have early deadlines (See Program Chart).
- Completed applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
- A late registration fee will be charged to any student who registers within 10 business days of the beginning of the fall or spring semester.
PLACEMENT TESTING
Degree- or certificate-seeking applicants and applicants without a high school diploma must take a reading-English-mathematics placement test prior to registering for courses. If applicants have taken the SAT I or ACT, they should submit their scores to the Office of Admissions. Transfer students who have completed both a course equivalent to Nassau's English Composition I [ENG 101] and a math course equivalent to Nassau's MAT 109 [College Algebra & Trigonometry], or higher, with grades of “C” or better, will be exempt from placement testing. Applicants who have completed either an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree will also be exempt from all placement testing. Visit the Placement Center website for additional information.
Applicants who demonstrate deficiencies in the three areas of reading, English, or mathematics will be required to register for necessary remedial course work in their first semester. Applicants who have deficiencies in all three areas will be required to complete the College’s Basic Education Program prior to enrolling in any credit-bearing courses. Applicants whose first language is not English will be tested by the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program and may be required to take ESL courses prior to their regular academic courses.
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT
New York State Public Health law requires that all students attending college in the state must have certain immunizations. Student who were born on or after Jan. 1, 1957 and who are enrolled for six or more credit hours must provide the College proof of immunization against measles, mumps and rubella. ALL students regardless of age who are enrolled for six or more credit hours must comply with the Meningitis requirement. Failure to comply with this law within 30 days from the start of the semester will result in a student's disenrollment from classes, without refund of tuition and fees and will be liable for full tuition and fees. Additional information regarding this regulation will be mailed to all admitted students.
DISABLED STUDENT SERVICES
A variety of services are available to those who identify themselves as having a physical, psychological, visual, hearing or learning disability. For more information, contact the Center for Students with Disabilities. For their website click here or visit their office in Building U.
