STUDENTS: Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why should I join a learning community?
- Make important connections between courses
- Provide more opportunities to learn material from both courses
- Help establish study groups
- Develop close relationships with faculty
- Meet new friends
- Increase overall academic success at NCC
2. How will it affect my schedule?
Learning communities are usually offered during peak times. After you select a paired course, an advisor can help you build a convenient schedule around it.
3. How do I decide which learning community is best for me?
There are many learning communities with ENG 101, a required course for all students. Many are paired with HIS, PSY, SOC, ECO, MAT and BIO. There are also linked courses with RDG 002 and RDG 030 and some special sections for majors in vocational and technical programs. There may be a learning community in your major. If you have not selected a major, read the titles and descriptions of the learning community pairs and check out the ones that sound most interesting to you. This may be an opportunity to explore a totally new area of study (See Current Course Offerings).
4. How can I enroll?
Ask an academic advisor, located in the Advisement Center
or
Visit the departmental office in your major area
5. What do students at NCC say about learning communities?
“I feel more comfortable asking questions because I know the students so well.”
“We used the bio text in both classes. The reading professor had us practice skills we could apply to our biology course, and she gave us some extra bio material, too.”
“The way the professors taught was incredible.”
“I think that this learning community is one of the best classes Nassau Community College offers.”
