This summer, the Long Island Writing Project (LIWP) will once again offer its successful 90-hour seminar in the Teaching of Writing on the Nassau Community College campus in Garden City. This hands-on workshop will be based on a model of teachers teaching teachers and build on current research in best practice in teaching writing, K-College. Whether you like to write or are reluctant, whether you are a new teacher looking for ideas or an experienced teacher interested in refining an approach or two, this workshop series will work for you. For three weeks, we will write together, read together, work in writing groups, immerse ourselves in effective approaches from our own classrooms and adapt new ideas for our own classroom uses. And yes, we will address the current climate of high-stakes testing and what it means to the classroom teacher.
Writing Project Summer Institutes attract a rich mix of reflective practitioners at different points in their careers from a variety of districts, grade levels and subject areas. Teachers participate in shared readings, reading and writing groups, and grade-level groups. Discussions address such topics as generating writing, revision, editing and assessment. We consider how best to work with the variety of students in our classrooms, addressing inclusion and English Language Learners. The LIWP also provides follow-up opportunities during the school year, with the possibility of participants working as teacher-consultants for the Project.
We invite teachers K-College to nominate an outstanding teacher they know for the 2009 Long Island Writing Project’s Invitational Summer Institute, or to apply themselves. This year’s Institute is being held from Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the Nassau Community College Campus (exact room to be announced).
Because we are a federally-funded site of the National Writing Project, based at the University of California at Berkeley, all teachers who are accepted will receive $900 stipends. Participants can receive up to six graduate credits from Hofstra, but they must pay Hofstra’s tuition, which will be partially offset by the $900 stipend. We also issue certificates attesting to the participants’ attending the ninety-hour Institute so that teachers can apply for in-service credit.
If you have any questions, please e-mail Melanie Hammer, Director, at Melanie.Hammer@ncc.edu. If you would like to communicate with a teacher who has participated in the past, we’d be glad to put you in touch with several past participants. We look forward to hearing from you via the attached application.
