Policies for Nursing Students

The policies which appear in the NCC catalog are applicable to all College students. It is recommended that students review the Nursing Department Policies in their entirety as presented in the Nursing Student Handbook. Nursing students are required to adhere to departmental policies. The following represents only a portion of these policies.

Assignments
All written assignments must be submitted when due, unless prior permission for lateness is obtained from the instructor. All written material must reflect only the individual's effort. Collaboration should occur only when a group assignment is required. Written assignments must be satisfactorily completed, graded and returned to the student before the student is allowed to sit for the final examination. If a student is caught cheating on an exam, the student will receive a zero on the exam and earn an immediate F in the course. The student will not be readmitted to the Nursing Program. Students will not share information about exam questions with anyone. Violation of the confidentiality of exams will result in disciplinary action. (See Code of Conduct NCC Catalog.)

Attendance
When an assigned seat is not going to be accepted by the student, it is a requirement that the student notify the Nursing Office at least seven days prior to the first day of class. Failure to notify the Nursing Office within the stated time will jeopardize readmission to the Nursing Program.

Students must attend all clinical experiences including pre and post conferences. Absences or lateness will jeopardize the student's standing in the Nursing course.

Clinical Assignments
Students are not permitted in the clinical area unless under the supervision of a faculty member.

Clinical Selection
Although students are allowed to pre-select clinical placement, the final decision is based upon Departmental needs and the availability of the clinical facilities.

CPR Certification
Prior to admission to NUR203, students must submit a copy of current certification of competency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The minimum requirement is Basic Cardiopulmonary Life Support (BLS-Rescuer) for health professionals. The certification must be valid through graduation.

Curriculum Pattern and Advisement
Students are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the current course requirements and pre and co-requisites. If College entrance placement exams indicate a need for remediation in English, mathematics or reading, remediation must be completed before entering the nursing program.  Nursing students must be able to communicate effectively in English. Once matriculated into the Nursing Program, students must complete core Nursing courses within a five-year period. If a request for readmission occurs following a change in the Nursing curriculum, the student may be required to retake Nursing courses to meet current program requirements

Grades
The academic requirements in the Nursing curriculum are demanding and students are cautioned to plan their work schedules or extra curricular activities with this in mind. Nursing course grades reflect both theoretical and clinical competence. The letter grade awarded is based on achievement in written objective tests. A minimum grade of 75 in each of the core courses is required to enter the subsequent nursing course or graduate.

A student will not be permitted to withdraw from a course after the final exam has been taken. The minimum grade point averages required to maintain academic standing are:

1.7 with 1-14 credits attempted
1.8 with 15-29 credits attempted
1.9 with 30- 47 credits attempted
2.0 with 48 or more credits attempted

A minimum of 15.5 credits (including NUR101) must be completed before progressing to NUR105.

A minimum grade of "C" is required in:
AHS131 to enter N105
AHS132 to enter N203
AHS105 or AHS 202 to enter N204

Health

No student will be allowed in any health care agency without clearance from the Health Services of Nassau Community College. Nursing students are required to submit evidence of a physical examination, antibody tiers and inoculations prior to their first clinical assignment in NUR103 and annually thereafter.

Drug screening may be required at some affiliating institutions. Failure of the screening will mean that student cannot attend the clinical practicum and will not be able to satisfactorily complete the course requirements.

Following an alteration in a student's health status, the student may be required to submit health clearance before further participation in clinical activities. Professional practice requires that when the student is in the clinical area, the student must be free of any stressor that could potentially impair functioning. Students who are injured or become ill in the clinical area should immediately report the injury or illness to their clinical instructor.

Malpractice Insurance
Coverage for student is mandatory and arranged through the College. The fee for this insurance is included in the bill from the Bursar's Office.

Professional Attire
When in uniform, students should be aware that they represent both the Nursing Department and the profession. Nursing students must supply their own required uniforms and equipment.
The student uniform may be worn only during scheduled clinical experiences. A complete description of the uniform is found in the Nursing Student Handbook and Student Course Outlines.

Professional Ethics
Nursing students must be of good moral character and may be subject to criminal background checks and random drug screenings. Nursing students must be legally eligible for employment and professional licensure in the United States. Candidates for licensure as a registered Professional Nurse in New York State must comply with Title VIII of the New York Education Law. Further information may be obtained from the Nursing Handbook of the NYS Education Department.
