Course Outline Physical Therapist Assistant (A.A.S.) |
The Nassau Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program has a well deserved reputation of excellence. It was established in 1969 and was amongst the first physical therapist assistant programs in the country. More than 1000 physical therapist assistants have been graduated from the program. Many are serving as clinical instructors in the program’s clinical education sites and are providing quality education for our current students. Still others have been graduated from professional physical therapy schools and are currently practicing physical therapists. |

Employer and graduate surveys rate the NCC PTA Program as excellent, particularly citing: the individual attention the students receive from the faculty, the quality of the faculty, the comprehensive curriculum, proficiencies delineating how to perform each skill, field trips, practice labs, the primary clinical affiliation and the clinical education sites.
The physical plant consists of two fully equipped, 1000-square-foot laboratories, a preparatory room, multiple offices, classrooms and supply rooms. Equipment simulating the current practice of physical therapy is either available on campus or via field trips to a variety of sites. Computer, print and audiovisual resources are plentiful and current.

Physical therapy is a rapidly growing field which is involved with the physical rehabilitation of people who have handicapping conditions, either temporary or permanent, such as athletes with sports injuries, children with cerebral palsy, the elderly, people recovering from fractures and surgery or people in pain. The physical therapist assistant (P.T.A.) works under the supervision of a physical therapist (P.T.).
A student entering the field should enjoy the sciences, interact well with others, have an interest in working with the disabled and enjoy a physically active job.
The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Upon successful completion, the student will be eligible for the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree to take the licensing exam and registration by the State of New York as a Physical Therapist Assistant.
There are two laboratories fully equipped with machinery and accessories found in a variety of physical therapy settings. The program is offered during the day only and may be completed in five (5) semesters. Students are admitted in the fall only and must be available for full-time study in the last semester.
The P.T.A. Program has been designed as a career program leading to employment at the end of two years of study. However, after completing a baccalaureate degree at an upper division college or university, students will be eligible to apply for transfer into a doctorate level physical therapy program. Admission is competitive.
