Physical Therapist Assistant
Program Description

NCC Campus

The Nassau Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program
has a well deserved reputation of excellence. It was established in 1969
and was amongst the first physical therapist assistant programs in the country. More than 1000 physical therapist assistants have been graduated from the program.
The physical therapist assistant (P.T.A.) works under the supervision of a physical therapist in hospitals, clinics, and other health service agencies. Employing knowledge of  the patient's condition, the physical therapist assistant alleviates pain by applying heat, cold, light, sound, water, and electricity in the form of specialized equipment.
Responsibilities also include: administering therapeutic exercise such as coordination activities for a brain damaged child or strengthening exercises for a patient following knee surgery, functional training for a stroke victim, and ambulation training, including the use of artificial limbs, braces, and aids.

A student entering the field should enjoy the sciences, interact well with others, have an interest in working with the disabled and enjoy a physically active job.

IF YOU THINK YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE FIELD OF PHYSICAL THERAPY:

1. Observe physical therapy in a local facility. Call a local hospital, school for the handicapped or nursing home and ask to speak to the physical therapy department or look up physical therapy practices in the yellow pages. All schools require prior observation and PT departments are generally very accommodating.

2. View a videotape in the library entitled "Hands on Health Care: the Profession of Physical Therapy"

The Physical Therapist Assistant Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Upon successful completion, the student will be eligible for the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree to take the licensing exam and registration by the State of New York as a Physical Therapist Assistant.

The program affiliates with more than eighty clinical education sites in Nassau and Suffolk, the five boroughs, and upstate New York. The campus has two laboratories fully equipped with machinery and accessories found in a variety of physical therapy settings.
The program is offered during the day only. Students are admitted in the fall only and must be available for full time study in the last semester.

Although the program has been designed as a career program leading to employment at the end of two years of study, the student will be eligible to apply for transfer into a five to six year professional physical therapy program, after completing additional credits in chemistry, physics, mathematics and humanities. Admission is competitive.

Application Process:

Apply to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program before the last day of the 1st week of May of the year you wish to enter the program.
