  • Nassau is the largest single campus community college in the State of New York.

  • The College is sponsored by Nassau County and is part of the State University  of New York (SUNY).

  • Nassau County has about 1.3 million residents, making it larger in population than 14 states. If it were a city, the county would be the sixth largest city in population in the United States.

  • Approximately twenty percent of the college-bound high school graduates in Nassau County enroll at the College.

  • Over twenty-thousand students are enrolled in 30 academic departments; 67 percent are full-time students; 52 percent are female, 48 percent are male. Sixty-nine percent are liberal arts majors. More than one-fourth are over the age of 25. Seventy-eight percent of the students are from Nassau County, eight percent from Suffolk County, 12 percent are from Queens and two percent are from elsewhere.

  • The first classes at the College were held in 1960, when there were 632 students at the school in total.

  • Another 14,000 individuals participate in Lifelong Learning and Special Programs for Business.

  • Forty-eight percent of the students are ethnic minorities.  The College has students from nearly 60 countries who speak 35 different languages.

  • Nassau Community College employs nearly 2,600 people, including 544 teaching faculty and approximately 862 adjunct faculty. 

  • The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools has described Nassau’s faculty as “perhaps without rival among the community colleges in the nation.”  More Nassau faculty members have received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and more have doctorates than faculty at any other community college in New York.

  • The College offers Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degrees, as well as certificate and not-for-credit Lifelong Learning courses.

  • Recently the College awarded the fourth largest number of associate degrees of all 1,800 two-year colleges in the United States.

  • About 70 percent of Nassau’s graduates continue their education at  four-year institution.

  • The men's and women’s athletic teams are often ranked among the top teams nationally.

  • The College is centrally located in the county on 225 acres on a former air base, Mitchel Field. There are 47 buildings on the campus. They include the Library, Physical Education Complex, Administrative Tower, two academic wings and refurbished former military buildings used for classrooms and administrative offices. A new Social Science and Art classroom building and a Student Center opened in 1997.  All buildings are accessible to the handicapped. 

  • The College catalog lists 648 different credit-bearing classes in more than 70 registered degree programs.  About 3,300 different class sections are offered each semester. The average class size is 21.

  • Distance Education courses are available  online, and are also broadcast on public television and on the campus FM radio station. 

  • The College has the largest senior citizen auditor enrollment in the SUNY system.
