Admission to the Nursing Program at Nassau Community College is granted to applicants via one of the following procedures: (a) direct admission from high school, (b) change of area, (c) transfer from another college, (d) articulation with selected Licensed Practical Nurse programs, or (e) through the Program for Advanced Standing in Nursing Courses. Obtaining a seat in the Nursing Program is highly competitive. Meeting the stipulated criteria does not guarantee a seat. All applicants to the Nursing Program – i.e., new freshmen, change of area candidates, and transfer students – must be legally eligible for employment and licensure in the United States at the time of application to the Nursing Program.

A.S. PROGRAM IN NURSING
DIRECT ADMISSION FROM HIGH SCHOOL
If you are applying to Nassau Community College’s nursing program with only high school credentials, you must meet the criteria for admission outlined in the “Programs & Admissions Requirements” chart in the current Admissions Guide and Application booklet. These requirements are:
Average of at least 80 in three years of English,
or
SAT Critical Reading score of 530 or above;
Average of at least 77 in two years of math.
through sequential II or Math A, or
SAT math. score of 480 or above;
Average of at least 75 in three years of science,
including a year of biology;
Average of at least 80 in English, math. and
science grades combined
Meeting these criteria is not a guarantee of admission; rather, it means that you will be considered for admission. If you are applying with only high school credentials, you may only apply for admission as a daytime student.
To facilitate success in the Nursing Program, students with only high school credentials may elect to complete the program in either four or five semesters. In semester one of the five semester option, students will complete 16 credits of liberal arts courses. Completion of these courses with a grade of “C” or better will guarantee a seat in Nursing in semester two.
ADMISSION TO NURSING FOR APPLICANTS WITH PRIOR COLLEGE CREDITS
(either Change of Area or transfer from another college)
To whom does this apply?
If you have ever attended college in the past (either at Nassau Community College or elsewhere), you must have completed (and have grades for) at least 13 credits of liberal arts courses that are part of the nursing curriculum, before being considered for admission to the nursing program. This applies to all applicants with previous college credit, whether you completed just one course or an entire degree program.
These 13 credits are:
ENG 101 - Composition I (3 credits)
AHS 131 - Anatomy & Physiology I (4 credits)
PSY 203 - General Psychology I (3 credits)
Mathematics Elective (credit-bearing, non-remedial course) (3 or 4 credits)
With the exception of NUR 101, NUR 105, NUR 203 and NUR 204, all courses listed in the nursing program are considered liberal arts courses (see last page).
NOTE: If you have taken some or all of these courses at another college, the course numbers may vary, but the course descriptions must match ours.
Upon completion of these courses, you must have an average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.00 scale) and at least a grade of “C” in all of these courses in order to be CONSIDERED for admission to the nursing program. (See College catalog for numerical equivalents of letter grades, if you are not familiar with these equivalents).
BEING ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN YOU WILL BE ACCEPTED TO THE NURSING PROGRAM.
You may complete more than 13 credits of liberal arts courses that are part of the nursing program, before attempting to enter the program. If you do, grades for all courses taken that apply to nursing will be counted in your average. We encourage you to apply to the nursing program when you have completed the 13 required credits cited above. However, you may choose to complete additional, or even all, of the liberal arts components of the program, before actually being admitted to nursing.
Applicable science courses completed ten or more years prior to admission to nursing will not be accepted. Effective September 2005, applicants will not be considered for admission to nursing if they have attempted AHS 131 more than twice (including grades of “W”).
Grades for courses that are not included in our nursing program will not be included in your average for the purpose of determining admission to the nursing program.
CHANGE OF PROGRAM:
(entering NCC as a liberal arts [“pre-nursing”] student and then changing to nursing; apply through the Nursing Department)
You may take all of your prerequisite courses at NCC, or you may use a combination of courses from other schools and courses from Nassau Community College when applying to the nursing program, in order to complete the 13-credit sequence. But if NCC is the last college you attended, or if you are currently attending NCC, you should not file a new application for admission to the nursing program. Instead, you must apply as a “change of program” student, by presenting your records (from ALL colleges attended) to the Nursing Department (Building V, room 210) in either the 2nd, 3rd or 4th week of March, for consideration for the following September, or in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th week of October, for consideration for the following January. For example, during the 2nd, 3rd or 4th week of March, 2008, requests will be accepted for transfer into the September, 2008 daytime and evening programs; and during the 2nd, 3rd or 4th week of October 2007, requests will be accepted for transfer into the January, 2008 daytime and evening program.
TRANSFER FROM ANOTHER COLLEGE:
(apply through the Office of Admissions)
If you are not yet attending Nassau Community College, you may apply to Nassau’s nursing program through the Office of Admissions, if the following conditions are met:
- You must have completed a minimum of 13 credits of prerequisite courses as described above (ENG 101, AHS 131, PSY 203, and a non-remedial math. course) and received at least a “C” in each.
- You must have an average of at least 3.0 in all transferable courses. A course will be transferable if you have received at least a grade of “C” and it is comparable to courses required for NCC’s nursing program (see last page).
NOTE; Grades below “C” in courses that are applicable to NCC’s nursing program will be ignored when calculating your average for purposes of admission to the nursing program.
ADVANCED STANDING:
The opportunity for “advanced standing” is available to LPN’s. This procedure enables you to “challenge” the first semester of nursing (NUR 101) and enter the nursing program as a second semester student.
To challenge NUR 101:
- Complete prerequisite courses (ENG 101, PSY 203, AHS 131, AHS 132, MAT elective)
- Pass the Computation of Dosage Examination with a grade of 85% or higher
- Attain a grade of “C” or higher on Excelsior College’s examination in Fundamentals of Nursing
- Pass NUR 101 Patient Care Performance Examination (three-part exam consisting of two-hour simulated patient care situation, a multiple-choice exam on the psychosociocultural aspects of patient care and an “intake and output” simulation)
Challenging NUR 105 (the second semester of nursing) should only be considered in exceptional situations. Students who believe that such a situation exists may speak to the Coordinator for Advanced Placement in Nursing Courses.
ARTICULATION WITH SELECT PRACTICAL NURSE PROGRAMS:
In order to qualify for admission with advanced placement after completing an L.P.N. program at BOCES or VEEB, candidates must:
- Have completed the L.P.N. program within 18 months prior to entering NCC
- Attain an average of 90% or higher in L.P.N. program
- Be recommended by the Director of the Practical Nursing Program
- Meet NCC requirements for matriculated study
- Complete any required remedial courses
- Complete co-requisite courses for NUR 101
- Pass the Computation of Dosage examination with a grade of 85% or higher
- Receive a minimum grade of “C” in Nursing 100 (Introduction to Associate Degree Nursing)
Candidates should contact the Advanced Standing Advisor 516-572-7230.
WAITING LIST
THERE IS NO WAITING LIST FOR ADMISSION TO NASSAU COMMUNITY COLLEGE’S NURSING PROGRAM.
RE-APPLYING
If you were not offered a seat in the Nursing Program when you fist applied, you are welcome to apply at the next application period. There is no limit to the number of times you may apply.
If you were previously admitted to our nursing program and chose not to attend, you will have to re-apply and meet the current criteria for admission. Having been admitted in the past does not guarantee that you will be admitted once again, as the applicant pool changes every year.
FOREIGN CREDENTIALS
If you are submitting high school and/or college records from a school outside the United States, you may be asked to have these records evaluated by an independent agency, such as the World Education Services in New York City, to determine whether or not you are eligible for admission and whether or not we will be able to award you any transfer credit.
If you were educated as a nurse outside the United States, you may or may not require further education in order to become an R.N. in the United States. To make this determination, you should obtain an application for the required verification of your credentials from: The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS), P.O. Box 8628, Philadelphia, PA 19104-8628. PHONE: 215-349-8767; FAX: 215-662-0425: E-MAIL: empire@cgfns.org; WEB: www.cgfns.org.
