The Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies Presents Catholics Confront the Challenge of the Great (Messina) Earthquake: Europe’s Worst Natural DisasterSeptember 25, 2009

Garden City, N.Y. - The Center for Catholic Studies at Nassau Community College is celebrating ten years of providing quality programs in the area of Catholic Studies to the college and the community by presenting an event in the College Center Building on Saturday, March 27. Celebrating Ten Years: The Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies begins at 1:30 p.m.

During the event, Bishop William Murphy of the Diocese of Rockville Centre will offer opening remarks. Dr. Joseph Varacalli, the center's director and founder, will then present plaques for distinguished service rendered to the center over its first decade. Honored will be the Society of Mary: Meribah Province (the Marianists); NCC Academic Associate Vice President Dr. James F. Polo; and the late NCC Administrative Associate Vice President Daniel Keahon. At 2:00 p.m., Dr. William Thierfelder, president of Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, North Carolina, will speak on the topic of Sports in Contemporary American Civilization: A Catholic Critique. Dr. William Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, will discuss The Importance of a Center for Catholic Studies at a Public Institution of Higher Education at 3:00 p.m. The program will be moderated by Monsignor Robert Batule, a professor at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington.

Celebrating Ten Years: The Nassau Community College Center for Catholic Studies is free and open to the public, but requires both registration and a parking permit. To register and receive a permit, contact the NCC Office of Lifelong Learning at 516.572.7472.
