SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher Visits Nassau Community College

Garden City, NY State University of New York (SUNY) Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher came to Nassau Community College (NCC) on Wednesday, September 2 as part of her summer tour of all 64 SUNY campuses. According to Dr. Zimpher, the visit was an important part of her effort to develop a strategic plan for the SUNY system as well as in introduction to the faculty, administrators and staff of NCC.

One theme stressed by Chancellor Zimpher during her time at Nassau was the College's, and by extension SUNY's, ongoing efforts to educate and retain the future leaders of our region. “SUNY's responsibility is to support our campus-community connections. We must seek to serve each community's needs and do what it takes to keep our gifted and well educated students within the region upon graduation,” she said.

During her visit, Chancellor Zimpher empathized with the concerns of Nassau President Dr. Sean Fanelli and the faculty, administrators and staff of the College. “Being a campus president twice in my career, I think I was just following my intuition to meet the presidents and hear the voices of the faculty, staff and community supporters,” she remarked.

Nassau Community College the largest single-campus, two-year college in New York State Ñ is an institution where nearly 23,000 full- and part-time students and 15,000 continuing and professional students start and continue their successful journey through higher education. With more than 65 fields of study offered on a 225-acre campus located in the center of Long Island, Nassau maintains a national reputation for excellence.

Dr. Zimpher is the 12th Chancellor of SUNY, the nation's largest comprehensive public university system with some 440,000 students. She began her tenure with a commitment to visit all 64 SUNY campuses in her first 100 days so she can meet with and learn from students, faculty, administrators, community leaders and other stakeholders on the future of New York's public higher education system. Prior to joining SUNY, Dr. Zimpher was president of the University of Cincinnati, an urban research university with 16 colleges, an academic medical and research center and an annual budget of $1 billion.
