Juliana Dijkstra of North Bellmore Elected Nassau Community College Student Government Association President Juliana Dijkstra - SGA President 2015

Garden City, NY – Juliana Dijkstra, Nassau Community College's incoming Student Government Association (SGA) president for the 2015-2016 academic year, had a positive experience in high school and wanted it to continue when she went to college. And according to her, it certainly has at NCC. Now, she would like to help other students have a fulfilling experience at the College, as well. (download hi res photo)

In addition to working hard on their studies, "I believe that one big way to have a positive experience at college is by getting involved in campus life and community service projects," she said. This is something that Dijkstra has done herself. At NCC this year, she volunteered to be a conversational partner in the College's language immersion program. She was also active in the Honors Program and worked as a student lobbyist with Nassau's Office of General Counsel.

Dijkstra believes that her peer leadership training will serve her well in her new position as SGA president. She is very interested in maintaining and increasing communication between the Student Government Association and the student body and wants to be responsive to student concerns.

"In all these ways, I'd like to believe that I matter as a Nassau student," Dijkstra said, adding that she encourages other students to also have an impact by getting involved in student life. There are many opportunities for Nassau students to learn, both inside and outside the classroom, she said. Through her classes and activities, Dijkstra has made many friends at the College.

The excellence of the professors at Nassau and the personal attention they show to their students has impressed Dijkstra. A resident of North Bellmore and a graduate of Mepham High School, the 19-year old wants to continue on to a four-year school and then pursue a career in business.
