Garden City, NY – The Nassau Community College Academic Senate offers the interesting events listed below during its spring 2015 Speaker Series. The programs are free, open to the public and accessible to the disabled. For more information about these events, please call 516.572.0165 x26191.

The Columbian Exchange: How the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria Brought Us Chocolate Bars, Szechuan Chicken, Spaghetti Marinara and Shepherd's Pie Monday, April 20 at 9:30 a.m. Tower 11th Floor Natalia de Cuba Romero, food writer and blogger, author of the culinary translation dictionary Eat Your Way Through Puerto Rico and regular contributor to Edible Long Island and Edible East End magazines, explains how the clash of two worlds in 1492 transformed cuisine in every corner of the globe.

The Effects of Climate Change on Food: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Monday, April 20 at 12:30 p.m. Tower 11th Floor NCC Prof. Carolyn Monastra uses photographs and stories from her project The Witness Tree in a discussion about the effects of climate change on global food production. The negative impacts of extreme storms, sea level rise, drought, water rights and global land grabs will be discussed, along with positive solutions like permaculture (a branch of ecological design and resource management that develops sustainable habitats and agricultural systems), WWOOFING (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms – a loose network of national organizations that facilitate placement of volunteers on organic farms), CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture in which members purchase a "share" of vegetables from a regional farmer) and food-coops.

What We Eat and What it Means: The Global Traditions of NCC Students Tuesday, April 21 at 9:45 a.m. College Center Building, Room 252/253 A LINCC (Language Immersion at Nassau Community College) student panel coordinated and moderated by Maryanne Kildare.

Zarela Martinez Talks Mexican Food and Culture Tuesday, April 21 at 11:30 a.m. College Center Building, Room 252/253 Zarela Martinez, The James Beard Foundation Who's Who of Food & Beverage honoree, PBS food personality, cookbook author, historian and restaurateur who pioneered real Mexican cuisine to New York discusses her career, her journeys and her varied national cuisine. (sponsored by the NCC Foundation and The Latin American Studies Project.)

Zarela Martinez Discusses Latino-Americans: Re-branding Ourselves in the New U.S. Landscape Tuesday, April 21 at 2:30 p.m. College Center Building, Room 252/253 Martinez covers career and business outlooks for Latino entrepreneurs and those who want to understand the growing Latino market.

Global Agriculture – Challenges and Visions Thursday, April 23 at 11:30 a.m. Tower Building, 11th Floor This program explains about how the top problems for humanity for the next 50 years will be energy, water and food. It discusses how agriculture and the way we produce food provides hope for a clean and sustainable future. Presented by NCC Biology Prof. Birgit Woelker.

Social Entrepreneurship Thursday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m. Tower Building, 11th Floor Ellen Gustafson, a veteran of three TED lectures and founder, with Lauren Bush, of the FEED bag project (FEED sells bags, accessories and apparel, building a set donation into the cost of each product. The impact of each product is signified by a stenciled number.) lectures on social entrepreneurship. (This lecture is sponsored by the Student Activities Office)
