Garden City, NY Each year, students in the Marketing & Fashion programs at Nassau Community College host a “Prom Boutique” for young women in need from area high schools, youth centers and at-risk agencies. The boutique provides girls who would otherwise not be able to afford a dress with a complete outfit for their prom, graduation or sweet 16. This year's Prom Boutique is slated for Saturday, April 17 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the NCC College Center Building (CCB).

The same NCC students who planned and publicized the Prom Boutique - and supervised the collection of dresses and accessories - will get retail experience when they set up the multi-purpose room and lobby of the CCB in preparation for the event and on the day of the boutique itself. The students will spend the day before setting up the 'store,' complete with on-site seamstresses, cosmetic demonstrations, signage, mannequins, clothes racks, and, of course, the dresses. On April 17, they will greet those who attend and run the boutique. All of this will be under the guidance of NCC Professors Heidi O'Connell and Joe Pescatore, who have been working on the Prom Boutique at Nassau for the past five years.

This year the Prom Boutique will include something a bit different: students designing for students. A while ago, NCC fashion students met with two individual high school students in order to find out what kind of outfit they wanted and then designed a dress specifically for them. “This is a project that our students will remember for the rest of their lives,” said Prof. Pescatore. “It's the perfect opportunity for them to take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to a real life situation.”
