The Fall 2009 Nassau Community College Cultural Program Presents Health Care Advice: A Visit from Former United States Surgeon General Steven K. Galson

  Surgeon General November 16

Garden City, NY – The Fall 2009 Cultural Program at Nassau Community College is proud to host Health Care Advice: A Visit from Former United States Attorney General Steven K. Galson, MD, MPH on Monday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the College Center Building. Dr. Galson will focus on presenting scientific evidence to help persuade the American public to make healthy choices about their health, safety and personal security.

Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson, who stepped down as acting Surgeon General of the United States in October 2009 after a two-year stint, was the nation’s top public health physician — its primary advocate for good health. Between January and June of 2009, he was also the acting Assistant Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, where he led a department-wide effort in preparing plans for the $650 million prevention and wellness section of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and managed 12 core public health programs. An advocate for childhood obesity prevention, Dr. Galson also launched the Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future Initiative and forged alliances with other national foundations, federal departments, faith-based groups and corporate America to raise awareness of this growing epidemic. Among his other key health initiatives have been efforts to reduce pre-term births, raising awareness of the H1N1 virus and preventing underage drinking.

Prior to his appointment as acting Surgeon General, Dr. Galson served as the Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the FDA. He also held senior positions in the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Human Services. Dr. Galson began his career as an epidemiological investigator at the Centers for Disease Control. He has been the recipient of numerous public health awards.
