The Latin American Studies and the Jewish Studies Projects at Nassau Community College Present"Neither Memory, Nor Magic" – A Feature Documentary, April 15

Garden City, NY The Latin American Studies Project and the Jewish Studies Project at Nassau Community College are proud to present a sneak preview of the documentary Neither Memory, Nor Magic at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 15 on the 11th floor of the Tower Building. Following the screening, filmmaker Hugo Perez will talk about his documentary at 2:30 p.m. in the College Center Building.

Neither Memory, Nor Magic explores the life, work and legacy of the Hungarian poet Miklos Radnoti, who died in 1944 during the Holocaust. Perez's Web site explains that the documentary tells “the story of Radnoti's life from the tragedy of his birth...to the rising tide of anti-Semitism, nationalism and war that consumed his adult life, to the final tragedy of his death at the hands of Hungarian fascists.” Readings of Radnoti's poetry are “woven in with archival footage as well as the recollections of those who remain sixty years later who knew him personally.”

Perez is founder of M30A Films and winner of the 2006 HBO/NYILIFF Short Film Award. During his talk, he will explore the elements of the life and work of Radnoti that inspired him to make the documentary and what viewers can take from it to help us shape a less destructive world. In addition, Dr. Sharon Leder, formerly of the NCC English Department, will discuss aspects of the history of Jewish immigration to Latin America and how Jewish writers have viewed their lives there from the perspective of a minority group.
