The Nassau Community College Firehouse Art Gallery Presents: "Eyes On the World Photo Exhibit Promoting World Peace & Cultural Understanding"

November 2-December 21

Garden City, NY – The Firehouse Art Gallery at Nassau Community College is proud to present the world-class photo exhibit Eyes On the World from November 2 through December 21. First shown at the United Nations, Eyes On the World was most recently exhibited in Pingyao, China, where it attracted nearly 100,000 viewers.

Eyes On the World is sponsored by the Alexia Foundation, which was begun by Aphrodite and Peter Tsairis after their daughter Alexia was killed in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in 1988. Alexia, an honor student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, was a passionate student of photojournalism. The Alexia Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping professional and student photographers achieve work that advances the principles of world peace and cultural understanding. Since its inception, the foundation has bestowed over $500,000 in grants to 80 undergraduate photographers and professional photographers.

Susan Dooley, Chair of the Art Department at Nassau, has had the opportunity to see the exhibit both in China and at the United Nations. “The photographs are extremely compelling,” said Dooley. “They promote greater understanding among cultures.” Dooley says the photos speak a universal language. “It’s an honor for the College to host this prestigious exhibit.”

Coinciding with the Eyes On the World exhibit is an appearance by Aphrodite and Peter Tsairis in an NCC Cultural Program called Transcending Tragedy: Gaining Global Understanding on November 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the College Center Building.

The Nassau Community College Firehouse Art Gallery is open Monday through Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information about the upcoming exhibit, please call 516.572.7162.
