The NJCAA National rankings came out this week, Nassau is ranked second in the NJCAA (Div 3). The Lions have six wrestlers ranked. Ricardo Gomez is ranked number first at 125lbs after a phenomenal freshman season. Ricardo was the National runner-up at 125lbs last year. Freshman Kodie Silvestri (141lbs) is ranked 6th, Rob Troy (149lbs) is 10th, Chris Gandolfi (174lbs) is 8th, Jesus Cartenga (184lbs) is11th and Corey James is (285lbs) 9th. Nassau will be competing at the East Stroudsburg Open this upcoming weekend.
Former Nassau wrestler Brandon Williamson (285lbs) won his first tournament of the season. Brandon went 5-0 and captured his first title for West Virginia University at the William & Jefferson Open. Steve Perez (141lbs) won two matches this past weekend for SUNY Cortland. Andre Harrison (149lbs) wrestling for Fort Hayes university finished 5th losing to Jamal Parks 6-5 from Oklahoma State University in the consolation round in the Central Missouri Open. Dan Daddino wrestling for Del Valley State finished 5th at 174lbs at the Bearcat Open going 5-2 for the day, he lost 4-2 to Austin Meys in a 4th tie breaker.
11/8/09: This past week the Nassau Wrestling team participated in the College of New Jersey Open, where many of the wrestlers had their first college wrestling experience. Nassau had three champions 141lbs Kodie Silvestri, 149lbs Brian Herold and 285lbs Corey James. They also had a few wrestlers finish third, 125lbs Jonathan Murray, 133lbs Ricardo Gomez and Mike Doria both co third place finishers and 184lbs Jesus Cartegana. Ricardo Gomez wrestled up a weight class and lost to Jaret Anonogus from Navy in overtime. Nassau next meet is the East Stroudsburg Open.
This past week former Nassau wrestlers competed all over the country. Former NJCAA National Chris Notte wrestled for the first time at 125lbs and won the Central Oklahoma Championship. Chris is currently ranked 10th for the Cowboys of Oklahoma State by the Amateur Wrestling News. Bobby Ward the 2009 NJCAA runner-up opened his season with a win over Turtogtokh Luvsandorj of the Citadel 6-4, as North Carolina State won their first match of the season 21-18. Brandon Williamson another NJCAA National Champion establish himself as the 285lb starter at West Virginia University with two wrestle off wins.
At the Division 3 level, two former NJCAA All Americans, Steve Perez and Eduardo Delgado started their 2009 season off at the Ithaca Invitational, Steve wrestling for SUNY Cortland finished second while his former Nassau teammate Eduardo Delgado now at Hunter finished 5th.
