General Overview
The Language Center of Lifelong Learning offers courses in English as a Second Language (ESL), foreign languages, and American Sign Language (ASL). The program is designed for students who wish to improve and expand their language skills.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL classes are designed to meet different student needs. The ESL core curriculum includes:
§ Introduction to the English Language
§ English Language Skills, levels 1-4
§ Reading and Vocabulary Development, levels A & B
Four levels of study, as well as a level for beginning skills, are conveniently scheduled for 6 hours per week for 8 weeks. We recommend that students use our computer lab to practice what they have learned in class and to develop selected skills. We have 2 lab locations and extensive software for student use.
In addition to our core classes, ESL students may take:
§ Conversation Skills
§ Grammar
§ TOEFL Preparation
§ Pronunciation Skills
§ Writing and US Art and Culture
After strengthening their English language skills, many students enroll in job training workshops or college classes, and participate in programs and activities that require English language use.
Languages Around the World and American Sign Language (ASL)
The Language Center of Lifelong Learning is proud to offer a variety of foreign languages for study as well as American Sign Language. Foreign language courses are taught to groups at different levels of mastery, guiding students in speaking, reading, and writing the language as well as in developing a familiarity with important customs, cultures, and traditions. Currently, we offer courses in Conversational Spanish, Conversational French, German, Conversational Italian, Chinese (Mandarin), Latin, Conversational Polish, and Conversational Russian and ASL (American Sign Language.)
To meet student scheduling needs, classes are offered on weekday mornings and evenings as well as on weekends. Please call 516-572-7062, 516-572-8081, or 516-572-7661 to learn more about our program.
