In 1975, New York State's lawmakers passed legislation mandating that a Drinking Driver Program (DDP) be made available to any motorist convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), or Driving While Alcohol Impaired (DWAI), subject to certain exclusions by magistrates or the Department of Motor Vehicles. Nassau Community College was chosen by the DMV as the original pilot program site, and the DDP exists today as one of only two program sites in Nassau County. The seven-week, sixteen-hour instructional program is designed to provide motorists with the tools necessary to change their drinking and driving behavior. The program utilizes direct classroom instruction, group-counseling activities and features a counseling interview for possible referral to a community based alcohol treatment facility as part of the state mandated curriculum.
The DDP program currently provides services for 1,000 - 2,000 motorists annually. It is located at 356 East Road on the College campus. To contact the office by telephone, please call 516-572-7201.
