Responds to H1N1 Influenza Virus

Nassau Community College officials are monitoring the H1N1 influenza virus, or swine flu, and have a plan of action should the virus be discovered in our community. Currently, the virus does not pose a direct threat to the NCC campus, and all classes, final exams, commencement, operations and events will continue as scheduled.

Nassau Community College would like to remind the NCC Community how to minimize the spread of germs on campus.  NCC mounted New York State Department of Health posters in all campus bathrooms to remind the NCC Community of the importance of proper hygiene.  These posters remind us l to wash our hands with soap and hot water, or use a waterless hand cleanser after:

• Blowing the nose and  coughing,
• using the bathroom,
• before and after eating, and
• after being in contact with or being near someone who is ill.

For your continued safety, NCC installed numerous hand sanitizing stations throughout the campus.  The focus is on areas where sharing of computer equipment by multiple users is involved.  In addition NCC is implementing the use of no touch soap dispensers in campus bathrooms.

NCC continues to ensure proper disinfection of athletic equipment (wrestling mats, shared equipment, etc.) that can harbor germs.  These protocols were in effect for years and are routinely evaluated for effectiveness.

In addition, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the use of common sense physical hygiene habits:

• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
• Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.  Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.

If you have flu-like symptoms, please visit your health care provider immediately. Students can visit the Student Health Services (located in the Lower Level of the Administrative Tower). If you are found to have flu or another similar illness, stay home to avoid spreading any illness.
