What should I bring with me to the test?
You will need to bring a pen, a calculator, your admission letter and a photo ID. You may also bring a paper dictionary and thesaurus.
If English is not my first language, what placement test should I take?
An ESL test is conducted for students whose native language is not English. Please call 516.572.9865 for more information.
Retests will only be given under the following conditions:
If you are placed in remedial Reading (RDG 001), you will be re-tested on the first day of the class. If you are placed in Reading (RDG 002) you can re-test if you take a brush-up course offered through the Lifelong Learning Department of the College. There is no re-test on the first day of classes in RDG 002.
As of the Fall 2009 semester, there will be no retests on the first day of ENG 001. Students will be allowed to retake the English essay only through the W.R.I.T.E. brush-up course that is offered through the Lifelong Learning Department of the College. (Students placed in RDG 001 may not register for this course. ESL students may take this course by recommendation only.)
Math, however, does not offer first-day re-tests. If you are placed in remedial Math (Mat 001 or 002), you will not be re-tested on the first day of class. You can take a re-test in math if you take a brush-up course that is offered through the Lifelong Learning Department of the College.
How many times can I take a brush-up course?
You may only take a brush-up course ONCE in each specific area. All students who enroll in a brush-up course will be re-tested at the completion of the course.
Should I take a brush-up course in math before taking the placement test?
If you have not taken math for six months or more, we strongly suggest that you first take a diagnostic test in math by logging in http://ncc.mymathtest.com/. These tests will analyze your math skills and indicate your strengths and weaknesses. This is a FREE service. You may also choose to register for a math brush-up course (CED 313) through Lifelong Learning prior to taking the test.
