PLACEMENT IS NOT DETERMINED BY YOUR HIGH SCHOOL GRADES. PLACEMENT IS DETERMINED BY HOW YOU DO ON THE PLACEMENT TEST.

These are 20 sample questions for the MATH portion of the Placement Test. You may use a calculator when taking the exam; be sure to bring one with you on the day of the exam. The Placement Test is a multiple choice exam in which you are required to answer every question. It is given on a computer. When taking the Placement Test, you cannot return to a previous question, so please make every effort to accurately choose your answers. Proficiency in questions similar to those below will place you into a credit math course. Additionally, there are more advanced questions on the exam which may enable you to enroll in higher level credit math courses.

Solutions to the MATH sample questions on NCC web site

1) 3/5 x 180/1=108

2) 21/4 x 1/3=7/4=1 ¾

3) 0.23 x 3.4 =0.7843

4) 0.125n=12; n=96

5) 18000-12500= 5500; 125000n=5500; n=0.44=44%

6) 7000-40=6960

7) 12-6.8=5.2

8) 5/6+7/8=20/24+21/24=41/24= 1 17/24

9) 48/1 x 2.5=108 miles

10) (-2)³(3)(-4)=(-8)(3)(-4)=96

11) (2x²+9x-6)-(8x²+7x+6)= (2x²+9x-6)+(-8x²-7x-6)=-6x²+2x-12

12) (2x+3y)²=(2x+3y)(2x+3y)=4x²+12xy+9y²

13) w²/(w³-6w²)=1/(w-6)

14) a²+b²=c²; c²-a²=b²; √c²-a²=b

15) xy=z-y; xy+y=z; y(x+1)=z; y=z/(x+1)

16) 1/(x+3)

1/x= x/(x(x+3)) (x+3)/(x(x+3))=(x-(x+3))/(x(x+3))=-3/(x(x+3))

17) -2/(4-(-2))=-1/3

18) ((2x)(-3y))/((3yz)(7x²z))=-2/(7xz²)

19) 2x/6=9; 2x=54; x=27
