THE ESSAY:

Your performance on this essay will be instrumental in determining if you are ready to take English 101. It is, therefore, important that you give full consideration to what you will say and how you will say it.

You will be asked to choose a topic and write an essay of about 250 words. Please make sure that you have done the following:

  • stated your main idea
  • used specific examples to support your position
  • written complete sentences
  • used correct verb endings
  • made your subjects and verbs agree
  • Formed separate paragraphs for each subtopic

HERE ARE SOME SAMPLE ESSAY TOPICS:

The issue of immigration is complicated in the United States, basically because many more people want to come to this country than our government will allow each year. Many immigrants want so much to come here, that they break the law and enter the country illegally. This fact has created some twelve million illegal immigrants living in our country. Some people believe that the U.S. should build a wall to keep illegal immigrants out. Others believe that we should extend amnesty and broaden our immigration policy so that many more immigrants can come here, especially as guest workers for a limited time. Present your views on the rights of illegal immigrants who are already in this country, and suggest ways of dealing fairly with the many people who wish to come to live in the United States.

According to recent surveys, many Americans are concerned about a growing trend toward rudeness in everyday life. We swear; we demand attention and immediate gratification; we have little or no patience; we bother others by speaking loudly on cell phones; we arrive late and leave early, making a disruption as we do so; we fight on the road, in school, in restaurants, in stores, and even in church. Some say that we have become a society of self-centered individuals with bad manners and no consideration for others. Others disagree, pointing to the many organizations of young people and adults dedicated to helping others here and around the world. In a carefully paragraphed essay, discuss your views on civility (good manners and respect for others) in American society.

Recently, a study of people’s reactions to beautiful and plain people has shown that beautiful people get better customer service, land jobs more easily, and are forgiven more easily for their mistakes and “sins.” Do you agree that beautiful people are privileged over plain people? Discuss your response, giving examples to support your opinion. In addition, give reasons why you believe people do or do not privilege the beautiful ones among us.

Explain and illustrate your response from your own experience, what you have heard and/or what you have read.
