To expand knowledge of Jewish culture beyond the limited and sometimes stereotyped images presented in mainstream media, the Jewish Studies Project, a campus-wide organization, sponsors relevant NCC events open to the outside community as well. These events have featured historians, sociologists, psychologists, political scientists, artists, writers, musicians, film directors and others. Jewish Studies Project events are usually keyed to the JWS 101 course so that students can attend, with material presented integrated into the syllabus.
JWS 101 introduces you to the fascinating multicultural diversity of the world Jewish experience. By reading, viewing and discussing stimulating historical and contemporary materials, you’ll learn about traditions and cultures of Mizrahi (Eastern), Sephardi (Iberian), Ashkenazi (Eastern European and German), and other Jewish communities throughout the world – including some you may not have heard about! You’ll explore the global spectrum of Jewish experience and identity through reading, discussion, alternative media, guest speakers, films and field trips. The course includes guest speakers from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds.
JWS 101 meets SUNY and other colleges’ transfer requirements. This interesting course situates the Jewish experience in a multicultural, multitraditional, interdisciplinary global context, enhancing knowledge of the world Jewish community.
