Creative Writing at Nassau Community College
You're Invited!
- Do you have an idea for a novel or a screenplay, but don't know how to get started?
- Are you ready to write the poetry you've always thought you had in you?
- Have you been writing in a notebook and finally want to share it with others?
- Do you want to take your writing to the next level?
Writers at every level are welcome in our small, student-oriented workshops. Beginners receive the encouragement they need while more advanced students find challenges that help them grow. Guided by experienced faculty, students learn to support each other and develop the confidence to keep writing once class ends.
Our Faculty
Poets, playwrights, fiction writers, essayists — all our faculty members are published, working writers, many with books, some having earned national and international awards. We are a diverse group, committed to teaching and providing our students with a creative writing experience comparable to that of a four-year, liberal arts institution.
Courses
The English Department offers four creative writing courses:
- ENG 313: Creative Writing
- ENG 316: Play and Screen Writing
- ENG 317: Fiction Writing
- ENG 318: Poetry Writing
Courses related to creative writing include ENG 217 (Autobiographical Writing) and ENG 200 (The Art of Essay Writing). For advanced students, there are also opportunities for independent study and creative writing-related internships.
Our Other Programs
In addition to the courses listed above, NCC’s Creative Writing Project (CWP) also offers other ways for students and members of the community to become involved with the work we do:
Literature, Live!
Literature, Live! is a reading series with two components. One brings to campus renowned writers from around the world to read their work and meet with students and members of the community for Q&A sessions, workshops and master classes (All readings are free and open to the public.)
The other component of Literature, Live! sends Creative Writing Project Faculty to libraries, local public schools, art galleries, museums or any other Long Island organization to give readings, conduct creative writing workshops and more.
Luna
Luna is Nassau Community College’s award-winning student literary magazine. The CWP invites members of Luna’s editorial board to sit on our Reading Proposals committee to help choose readers for our Literature, Live! reading series. As well, members of the CWP — several of whom serve as Luna’s faculty advisors — collaborate with Luna’s editors to produce the magazine.
