Debate Team
 

The NCC Speech and Debate Team is led by Professor Trent Webb of the Communications Dept. The team represents NCC and competes against both two-year and four-year colleges. There are approximately 14 different events in which students can participate. The team travels to five to six  local tournaments and attends the Phi Rho Pi Junior College National Championship in April of each year.

Highlights of the NCC Speech/Debate Team

2001-02 Team at nationals in Fort Worth, Texas

  • First team from NCC to ever be represented at the National Junior College Championships
  • Jon Gillman and Nicholas Amante win a 3rd place Bronze Medal in Parliamentary Debate
  • The team is represented by: Jon Gilman, Nicholas Amante, Kenny Hellberg, Jessica Klein, and Rachel Freni


2002-03 Team at nationals in Portland, Oregon

  • Entire team takes an unprecedented 3rd place Bronze Medal for team achievement
  • Richard Wisneski wins a 3rd place Bronze Medal in Prose Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, and Parliamentary Debate
  • Michael Esposito wins a 3rd place Bronze Medal in Dramatic Interpretation and Parliamentary Debate with partner Richard Wisneski
  • Jon Gillman and Nicholas Amante win a 3rd place Bronze Medal in Duo


 

2003-04 Team at nationals in Los Angeles, CA

  • Most events ever taken to nationals by NCC: 16 slots!!!
  • Valerie Mack wins a 3rd place Bronze Medal in Prose Interpretation
  • Team ties for 5th for overall team achievement
  • The team is represented by: Valerie Mack, Saranna Posmantier, Mereika O’Garro, Tim Dillon, Kenny Sarosi, and Perry Radosysczki

 

2004-05 Team at nationals

  • Largest team ever taken to nationals by NCC: 7 students!!!
  • Mereika O’Garro wins a 3rd place Bronze Medal in Persuasive Speaking
  • Tim Dillon wins a 1st place Gold Medal in Parliamentary Debate with partner Shawn Golden and wins a 3rd place Bronze Medal in Impromptu Speaking
  • NCC is chosen as the host school for the national championship
  • Team competes for the first time in Readers Theatre: the most complex event at nationals!!!
  • The team is represented by: Valerie Mack, Saranna Posmantier, Mereika O’Garro, Tim Dillon, Laura Ping, and Shawn Golden

 

2005-06 Team

  • Team was represented by: Atif Sial, Ben Carson, Jared Nelson
  • Recieved Honorable Mention in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the National Tournament
  • Named Top Community College Team on the East Coast


2006-07 Team

  • Team was represented by: Katie Polizzi, Alison DeSpirito, Ashley McGowan, Adam Kirschenbaum, Atif Sial, Etan Wishnevski, Manny Alvarez, Joe Curran
  • Our largest team ever at the national tournament
  • Named Top Community College in the state of NY and East Coast
     Placed 2nd at the Sunset Cliffs Classic, the largest tournament on the West Coast

 
2007-08 Team

  • Team was represented by: Kristina Dawkins, Vernon Byrd, Danielle DiTomasso, Steve Blake, Brandon Horishny, Robert Stahl
  • Robert Stahl placed 3rd (Bronze Medal) in the nation in Persuasive Speaking
  • Kristina Dawkins and Vernon Byrd won the Gold Medal - 1st place in Duo
  • Nassau placed 5th in the nation

 
2008-09 Team

  • Team was represented by: Danielle DiTomasso, Amanda Cunningham, Andrew Schustek, Manny Alvarez, Kyle Williams, Steve Blake
  • Danielle DiTomasso won a Bronze Medal - 3rd place in Prose Interpretation
  •  Amanda Cunningham and Andrew Schustek won a Bronze Medal - 3rd place in Parliamentary Debate
  •  Manny Alvarez won a Bronze Medal - 3rd place in both After-Dinner Speaking and Programmed Oral Interpretation
  •  Named Top School and Top Community College Program in New York and East Coast

 

2009-10 Team

  • Team was represented by:  Justin Dougherty, Alexandra Zajaczkowski, Brian Byrne, Benjamin Rosenthal, Sean Bonilla, Henry Ferrufino
  • Justin Dougherty won a Bronze Medal - 3rd place in Prose Interpretation at the national championship
  • Most trophies won by any NCC team in a single season: 100!
