Things to Consider When Selecting Courses

Selecting courses is an important skill for students. If you are in a specific major, you must take the required courses for that major. If electives are allowed, you should consult with an advisor to determine which electives are appropriate for you.
For the liberal arts student, English 101 and 102 are the only required courses.  To complete the remaining requirements for your degree, you may choose from a wide variety of courses within specific categories.

Here are some important things to consider in selecting courses:
  • Have I read the course description in the catalog?
  • Does the course sound like it would interest me?
  • If there are prerequisites for the course, have I satisfied them?
  • Does the course have relevance to my career goals?

(If you have not decided on a particular career, consider visiting the Career Development Center in Nassau Hall Room 14, 516-572-7696.)

  • Will this course give me the skills to help me in the workforce?
  • If I know what college I will be transferring to, have I checked to see if the course is transferable? Transfer Office in Room 4 of Nassau Hall can help (516-572-7127).
  • If I am trying to improve my grade point average, am I taking the appropriate courses?

      • Should I repeat courses?

      • Am I taking courses that require too much work?

      • Do I have the skills necessary for these courses (For example, reading, mathematics, research)?

      • Are there specific professors I would like?

  • What I should consider in scheduling my classes:
      • Can I realistically get to the class on time?
      • If I have to work, do I have enough time to get to work?
      • How many classes can I realistically handle in one day?
      • Have I left time for homework or library research?

Remember, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact an advisor at the Advisement Center or an advisor from your academic department.
