Transferring to a SUNY Four Year Institution:
SUNY General Education Requirements (GER)
For Bachelor's Degrees at SUNY
What are they?
The SUNY General Education Requirements are a variety of courses needed to graduate from any four-year SUNY school. There are 10 categories of study. Each can be fulfilled by a number of courses. The categories and their courses are listed on the transfer guide. In general, you need to take one course from each category to graduate.
Can a course be used in more than one category?
Yes. As an example, HIS 240, Revolutions in the Modern World, can be used to meet both Other World Cultures and Social Sciences categories. However, you will still need to have a total of 30 credits from the general education categories as a whole. You may take more than one course from any of the categories. There is one exception: courses used to meet the Humanities category cannot be used to meet any other requirement.
How can I be sure if my courses are going to meet the SUNY General Education Requirements?
Use the transfer guide to look up the categories and their respective courses offered at NCC that satisfies them. Meet with an advisor to review these courses as they apply to the SUNY General Education Requirements.
Do I have to meet these requirements before I transfer?
No. You do not have to meet the requirements either to graduate from Nassau or to transfer to a SUNY school or a non-SUNY school. However, students planning to transfer with an A.A. or A.S. degree to a SUNY school are recommended to have completed 21 hours of SUNY General Education Requirements (seven categories) before they graduate from NCC. You are encouraged to take the full 30 credits before you transfer to maximize the strength of your transfer courses and to begin taking elective courses in your major at the four-year SUNY institution.
If I'm planning to transfer to a non-SUNY school, do I need to meet these requirements?
No. Each four-year institution has its own General Education Requirements. To learn what the requirements are for a non-SUNY four-year institution, check with that institution via phone, e-mail, or Web site.
To keep current on the courses that satisfy the SUNY General Education Requirements, consult an advisor at the Advisement Center.
