The foundation for meaningful assessment of student learning outcomes is best built beginning at the classroom level. This classroom-level foundation becomes the base on which are constructed the functionally aligned assessment frameworks of programs, departments, the college and the system. In this way, the process and results of student learning outcomes assessment may be fully integrated into the larger framework of institutional mission and planning. It is through this integration that we begin to build a campuswide “culture of assessment,” which is predicated on widespread adoption of the philosophy of meaningful assessment of goals through the use of measurable outcomes.
